What on earth am I supposed to do with toenail clippings?
Can I compost toenail clippings?
Throwing Nothing Away
What I didn't really explain in the last post
This isn’t so much an exercise in being waste-free, as an exercise designed to see how much waste I will be left with, and what I can do with that. I’m interested in how little an average person can throw away, with the least effort possible. I won’t be contributing anything to landfill sites, so I’m expecting to have a few piles of oddments that I don’t know what to do with.
Later on today, I’ll post what I can and can’t recycle, and how that’s going to affect me. I think what I’m really looking forward to with this project is not knowing what waste i’m going to end up trying to find something to do with, and seeing what I actually can come up with. What i’m hoping is that this whole project will really boost my creativity and help me to think differently about waste and the environment.
Questions, Questions, Questions
So, what are you doing?
It’s more a case of what I’m not going to do. I’m not going to contribute any waste to landfill sites from Earth Day 2009 until Earth Day 2010 (That’s April 22nd 2009 until April 22nd 2010 for those who don’t know when Earth Day is). I’ll be recycling everything that I possibly can. I’ll be blogging about my efforts on a regular basis.
So, why now?
Two main reasons:
1. I really wanted to do something in the spirit of Earth Day.
2. My town has just started an increased recycling program, and for the first time, I feel that something like this is possible.
So what are you going to do with everything you normally throw away, but can’t recycle?
I will be doing one of these things:
1. Finding an alternative use for the item.
2. Finding someone else who wants the item.
3. For some of the more obscure items I accrue as a result of this task, I hope to become a bit more arts and craftsy, and create some new, exciting things. I’ll be posting plenty of photos, don’t worry, you won’t miss out on seeing any of hideous efforts to be arty.
So you must be a pretty hardcore environmentalist to be doing this then?
Not true. I am just a regular guy. Yes, I recycled what I could before now, but in all honesty, and I am slightly ashamed of this, I have never really gone out of my way to “be green” before.
What was the last thing you threw away?
I threw away a piece of chewing gum and the wrapper it was in, at 10pm on April 21st 2009. I don’t think I’m going to be able to think of a use for used chewing gum, so that’s probably the last piece of chewing gum that I am going to eat in a while!
